The ladder walk of Rochehaut — also known as the 'Promenade des Échelles' — is one of the most spectacular hikes in the Ardennes. You descend along iron ladders and chains fixed to the rock faces, with breathtaking views over the Semois valley and the picturesque hamlet of Frahan.

    The route

The trail is marked with red rectangular signs bearing the number 43. From the village of Rochehaut, follow Rue des Moissons towards Chemin des Falloises. The real walk begins at the warning sign 'parcours dangereux' — not because it's unsafe, but because it's physically demanding. Right after, a steep staircase of tree roots gives you a taste of what's to come.

    What makes it special?

This is no ordinary walk. The route takes you along steep rock faces fitted with iron ladders and chains. The ladders are built for adults, with significant spacing between the rungs. You climb, descend and squeeze through rock crevices — always rewarded with breathtaking panoramas.

    Who is it for?

This walk is not suitable for small children, pregnant women or people with a fear of heights. We recommend a minimum age of around 10 — younger children can potentially be carried in a back carrier. Taking dogs is strongly discouraged: the ladders are too steep to carry an animal safely.

    Preparation

    • Sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential — trainers will slip on the rocks
    • Bring a first aid kit — the rocks can be sharp
    • In rain, snow or icy conditions the walk is not recommended: ladders and rocks become extremely slippery
    • Bring enough water

    Parking

Three free car parks are located near the starting point: - At the Église Saint-Firmin de Rochehaut church - At the Le Frahan viewpoint — with a stunning view over the Semois meander - On Rue de la Sense

    The view

Rochehaut is known for its breathtaking panorama over the Semois valley and the medieval hamlet of Frahan, nestled in a meander of the river. The village itself is one of the most beautiful in Wallonia and deserves a visit in its own right.
